Iron and Ferritin Levels

Iron plays an important role for any athletes performance.  Iron helps the body develop red blood cells so that the hemoglobin can carry oxygen to all parts of the body.  Athletes depend on quick oxygen replenishment to muscles after extensive use of those muscles.  During any athletic event your muscles uses stored ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to fuel.  After the resources for fuel (ATP, glycogen, myoglobin) has diminished, your muscles require oxygen to replenish its levels.  Your blood helps transport oxygen.  If the iron level is low (ferritin) then transportation of oxygen is not efficient.
